What Is VA Respite Care?

Short-term relief through the VA's Home and Community Based Services
VA Respite Care is a short-term home care service for eligible veterans, designed to give family caregivers temporary relief from the demands of daily caregiving. A qualified caregiver steps in so the veteran continues receiving attentive support while the family member rests, travels, or tends to personal needs.
Respite care can be provided in the veteran's home by a trained caregiver, at an adult day health care center, or through a short stay at a VA community living center. At Care Plan Inc, we specialize in in-home respite care — delivered in the environment where veterans feel safest and most comfortable.

Why Respite Care Matters

Caring for a veteran is an act of love — but even the most dedicated caregivers need time to recharge

Prevent Caregiver Burnout

Caregiving is a full-time commitment. Respite care reduces stress and fatigue so you can continue providing quality support without sacrificing your own health and wellbeing.

Continuity of Care

When you take a break, your veteran doesn't go without. A trained, nurse-supervised caregiver steps in to maintain the same standard of daily support and companionship.

Flexible Relief on Your Terms

Whether you need a few hours, a full day, or extended time away, respite care works around your schedule. Rest, travel, or handle personal needs knowing your loved one is in safe hands.

Who Qualifies for VA Respite Care

Eligibility is based on clinical need, not income

Enrolled in VA Health Care

The veteran must be enrolled in the VA Health Care System. Not yet enrolled? Your local VA Medical Center can guide you through the process.

Has a Family Caregiver

A spouse, family member, or loved one provides most of the veteran's daily care and assistance. Respite care is designed to support that caregiver.

VA Care Team Approval

Your VA primary care provider or social worker determines that short-term caregiver relief would support the veteran's health and overall family wellbeing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about VA Respite Care in Michigan
VA Respite Care provides short-term relief for family caregivers by having trained aides care for veterans in their homes. It allows caregivers to rest, travel, or attend to personal needs while ensuring the veteran continues receiving safe, professional care.
Respite care is typically authorized for a limited number of hours or days per year, depending on the veteran's needs and the caregiver's situation. The exact duration is determined by your VA primary care provider or social worker during the care planning process.
You may qualify if you are enrolled in the VA Health Care System, have a family caregiver who provides most of your daily assistance, and your VA care team determines that short-term relief would support your health and wellbeing. Eligibility is based on clinical need, not income.
You don't need to fill out a separate application form. Your VA primary care provider or social worker will complete an assessment and can submit an authorization for Respite Care services directly to a VA-approved provider such as Care Plan Inc. If you're not yet enrolled in VA Health Care, you'll need to complete VA Form 10-10EZ.
The VA offers several types of respite care: in-home care (the kind Care Plan Inc provides), adult day health care centers, and short-term stays at VA Community Living Centers or contracted facilities. Care Plan Inc specializes in in-home respite care for veterans across Southeast Michigan.
In most cases, VA-funded respite care is provided at no cost to the veteran. However, depending on your VA priority group or income level, there may be a small copay for some services. Your VA social worker can confirm your cost status before care begins.
Yes. Veterans and their families can request respite services as needed throughout the year, as long as total hours remain within the VA-authorized amount. Your care plan can be updated or renewed by your VA provider if your situation changes.
