Many Veterans in Michigan want to remain at home while receiving the care they need. The VA Home Care Program helps make that possible by offering in-home support through trained caregivers, nurses and aides. Yet many families are unsure where to begin or what services are available. This article explains how the VA Home Care Program works, who may qualify and how Care Plan Inc. can serve as a trusted resource.

Across Detroit, Ann Arbor and Southeast Michigan, Veterans are learning that VA-funded home care provides more than medical help. It supports independence, comfort and peace of mind for families who want their loved ones safe at home.

What Is The VA Home Care Program

The VA Home Care Program is part of the Department of Veterans Affairs Home and Community Based Services. It helps eligible Veterans receive assistance with daily living, basic medical support and companionship in their own homes. The goal is simple: help Veterans stay independent and connected to their communities for as long as possible.

Programs Included Under VA Home Care

Depending on each Veteran’s needs, the VA may provide one or more of these in-home services:

Who May Qualify For VA Home Care

Qualification depends on enrollment in VA health care and a provider’s assessment that in-home support is clinically necessary. The best way to begin is to speak with a VA primary care provider or social worker.

General guidelines:

  • The Veteran is enrolled in VA health care
  • A VA provider determines that in-home support is needed
  • The Veteran needs help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing or mobility
  • The Veteran has a family caregiver who may benefit from respite support

Many services are part of the VA Standard Medical Benefits Package. Copays may apply depending on priority group and income. For an overview of programs visit the VA’s Home and Community Based Services page.
